Abstract
The collection comprises of Tule Lake newsletters and bulletins, materials issued by the Pro-Japan group, 報國奉仕團 Hokoku Hoshidan (or Hoshi Dan), WRA publications, and incarceration documents that mostly belonged to Kiyoshi and Mitsuye Uyekawa. There are also Kiyoshi's manuscripts of original fictional works, copies of fictional works by Japanese authors, and correspondence, bulletins, and manuscripts by the haiku circle members. Abstract
This collection documents World War II experiences of Hayao "Sam" and Toshiko Chuman, who were Kibei Nisei born in the United States but grew up and completed school in Japan, and then returned to the U.S. prior to the war. It chronicles the Chumans’s incarceration from the Santa Anita Assembly Center, through Jerome, Rohwer, Tule Lake camps, and the Santa Fe and Crystal City internment camps as well as their struggle for restoring their U.S. citizenships in the 1960s. This collection contains photo albums and scrapbooks compiled by George Naohara and Mitzi (Masukawa) Naohara, other materials depicting their experiences during World War II and the Korean War, the postwar camp reunion and pilgrimage, and the Gardena Buddhist Church activities in which George Naohara engaged after the war.
