The series contains article drafts and published articles by Bob Mattingly, under the pseudonym Charles Walker, concerning labor-related topics for various publications including “Labor News Briefs”, “Teamsters Notebook,” and unidentified publications. Article drafts by and correspondence with Barry Sheppard, Marilyn Ullman, Ken Paff, Don Tonkell, and others are also in the series.

Files documenting Mattingly’s research on various demonstrations such as a Seattle demonstration against the World Trade Organization, an International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) protest of a Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) lockout, and an anti-war and anti-racism demonstration are included, as are research files regarding political topics such as Trotskyism, the Fourth International, Pabloism, Fidel Castro, the Solidarity Party, the Socialist Workers Party, and the Freedom Socialist Party. There are also research files chronicling the activities of various labor unions in addition to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), such as the American Federation of Labor, Congress of Industrial Relations (AFL-CIO), United Farm Workers (UFW), United Auto Workers (UAW), United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), and others. The research files contain news articles, article drafts, leaflets, color photographs and negatives, and correspondence.

Agendas, constitutions, meeting minutes, leaflets, color photographs and negatives are present that chronicle Mattingly’s involvement with political organizations such as the East Bay Chapter of Labor Party Advocates and the Labor Party USA. Bay Area Young Socialist Alliance letters to and from Bob Mattingly, a West Coast Vacation School and Camp schedule, a Northern California Students Peace Rally leaflet and statement, and bulletins from the Young Socialist Alliance are also included, which reflect Mattingly’s political interests from early in his life. Educational guides published by the Center for Labor Research and Education, Institute of Industrial Relations, University of California are present, as are Mattingly’s student documents such as grade reports, a final exam from the City College of San Francisco, class schedules, and course materials concerning arbitration and grievance procedures. One file of leaflets and newsletters published by the Labor Party Caucus of the Peace and Freedom Party, the Bay Area Spartacist League, Progressive Labor Party, and the Independent Socialist Club from 1967-1969 is also included.
