Biographical / Historical
The Nation of Islam (NOI) was founded in Detroit, MI. in 1930 by Wallace D. Fard (1877-1934) as an organization focusing on the Islamic and Black nationalist movement. Elijah Muhammad (1897-1975) succeeded Fard in 1934, establishing the organization's headquarters in Chicago, known as Mosque No. 2. The organization also had chapters located in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. Some of NOI's most notable members included Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. After Muhammad's death in 1975, his son Warith Deen Mohammad (1933-2008) took over NOI, renaming it the World Community of Islam in the West in 1976, and American Muslim Mission in 1981. Louis Farrakhan left the group in 1977 in order to re-establish the Nation of Islam using the teachings of Elijah Muhammad.
