The Navarro-Dowling Family Collection (1965-1990; undated) contains one box and .21 linear feet with an autobiography written by Lenora Bautista Navarro, a biography about Lenora Bautista Navarro written by Carmen Navarro, letters from Prisca Navarro to Carmen Navarro, letters from Lenora Bautsta Navarro to Prisca Navarro, and an article from The Philippine Educator. Letters discuss domestic and family life; health updates; and information regarding coming to American from the Philippines.

Biographical / Historical

Lenora Bautista Navarro was born in the early 1900s and passed away on September 1987. She grew up in La Union, Philippines where she also studied to become a teacher and eventually taught for seventeen years. She was married to Alejandro Navarro, on August 4, 1928. Lenora Bautisa Navarro's children include: Carmen Dowling, Lenora Navorra Dowling, and other unnamed sons and daughers. Her sister was Prisca Bautista.

Alejandro Navarro was born in the Phiippines. He was sent to Manila in order to learn Spanish.He worked as a driver for an Archbishop Father James Cantwell when he got discharged in San Francisco. When he arrived in Hawaii at the age of 17, he was registered as Alex Navarro so he was also referred to Alex when he enlisted into the United States Navy and sent to be based in California. After four years, they wanted to reassign him to a different location, but he refused and was honorably discharged.
