Torrance Oral History Project
Scope and Contents
The Torrance Oral History Collection (April 3-June 2, 1987) includes 0.33 linear feet of 1/8 inch audio cassette tapes of oral history interviews by Molly M. Sipe. The oral history interviews were recorded as part of a project, Oral History Collection - Re Torrance Growth and Development, 1970-1987, as part of a requirement for a Masters Degree in Public History, in Fall of 1987. The oral history interviews include former mayors, Jim Armstrong, Katy Geissert, and Ken Miller. Other interviews include Gerald L. Alter, Rick Capellino, Mikko Haggott-Henson, and J. Walker Owens. The topics of these interviews include political campaigns, growth in Torrance, Pacific Electric Railway Depot, and other topics related to the city of Torrance. These interviews have been digitized and are available online.

Biographical / Historical
The City of Torrance was founded in 1912. The land that would become Torrance was aquired from the Dominguez Family by Jared Sidney Torrance and his investors who formed the Dominguez Land Company. Planners and archictects such as Irving Gill, were hired to design buildings, homes for workers, commercial buildings, and the Pacific Electric Railway.
