Scope and Contents

The Wednesday Progressive Club collection (1912-1982; undated) contains three boxes and 1.05 linear ft. of material belonging to the Wednesday Progressive Club. The majority of the collection includes documents, minute books, and financial records regarding the Wednesday Progressive Club. Box 1 contains financial record books that include receipts, warrants, disbursements, and savings account income information. Box 1 also contains documents about the Bennet property, which include a description of the property, memorandum, a note regarding mortgage payments, a loan application, and an escrow demand. Additionally, Box 1 contains documents related to the Los Angeles City Board of Education purchase of Lot 12 from the Wednesday Progressive Club, a letter of resignation from member Amy Harper, and a resolution regarding promissory notes and mortgage. Box 1 also contains four minute books describing the meetings and locations and a minute book dedicated to the garden section. Box 2 contains a minute book, federal tax returns, Tax documents, receipts, and a Salvation Army pamphlet.Box 3 contains a treasurer's record book, financial record book, membership booklets, programs, certificates and memorandums regarding Wednesday Progressive Club's contributions to the "Penny Pines Program", and other documents.

Biographical / Historical

The Wednesday Progressive Club was a club in the Gardena, California area organized by women who focused on philanthropic work. The Wednesday Progressive Club promoted social interactions and camaraderie among its members. The club was organized in 1906, incorporated in 1909, and federated in 1911. It was a social and community organization that served their community through various means such as volunteering and donations to multiple organizations like agricultural organizations. The club motto was “To Our Club, Loyalty. To our community, wise service”. Additionally, The Wednesday Progressive Club sponsored the creation of the Gardena Library.
