Japanese American Newspaper Collection

This collection features newspapers published by the Japanese American community pre and post World War II. Some of the publications in this collection include:

Kashu Mainichi

Kashu Mainichi began publication in 1931 as a daily newspaper by Sei Fujii. The publication temporarily stopped publishing in March 1942 due to Executive Order 9066 and the incarceration of Japanese Americans. The newspaper began publishing again on August 11, 1947, and ran until 1991 under the leadership of Sei Fujii's son-in-law, Hiro Hishiki.

Maui Shinbun

The Maui Shinbun was founded as a semiweekly newspaper in Wailuku, Maui in 1906 by Kinjiro Yokogawa. An English section was added to the paper in 1928. In 1941 the newspaper was no longer in publication.

Pacific Citizen, the National Newspaper of the JACL

Pacific Citizen, the National Newspaper of JACL, (Japanese American Citizens League) is a semi-monthly national newspaper that has been in publication since September 1929. The newspaper was originally called the Nikkei Shimin. It was first published in San Francisco and then moved to Salt Lake City during World War II. It now operates out of Little Tokyo in Los Angeles.

Rafu Shimpo

Rafu Shimpo is a Japanese American newspaper published in Little Tokyo in Downtown Los Angeles. The newspaper was founded in 1903 by Masaharu Yamaguchi, Rippo Iijima, and Selijro Shibuya as a paper that reports in Japanese and English. The topics of the paper include world events, local news of Los Angeles, entertainment, sports, and obituaries. Rafu Shimpo is the longest-running Japanese American news publication in the United States.
