Scope and Contents

The Priscilla Golding Collection (1994-2000; circa 1990s) contains .42 linear feet of documents related to the Intermodal Surface Transportation and Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 and Northeast Women in Transportation (NEWIT). This includes: material related to ISTEA history and the “Fulfill the Promise” campaign; NEWIT meeting minutes and agendas, proposals, project updates, correspondence, and history; as well as copies of a petition for rule making and policy changes addressed to the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Program (OFCCP); and copies of City of Boston ordinances and acts related to hiring women and construction jobs.

Biographical / Historical

Priscilla Golding was a member of Northeast Women in Transportation (NEWIT) and director of Women in the Building Trades, which was located in Jamaica Plain, MA. Founded in 1991, NEWIT was a coalition of tradeswomen located in the Northeast of the United States who were committed to increasing training, employment, support services, and professional development for women and minorities looking for viable careers in the transportation industry. During Golding’s time in NEWIT, she worked to gain access to funds from ISTEA for women and minorities to advance their careers in the transportation industry. Intermodal Surface Transportation and Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 authorized funds for highways, highway safety, and mass transportation for the fiscal years 1992-1997.

This collection contains meeting minutes; notes; reports; articles; correspondence; memorandums; and other material belonging to Priscilla Golding, an advocate for women in highway construction. Golding was an active member of Northeast Women in Transportation (NEWIT), which was created to help women and minorities gain access funds from the Intermodal Surface Transportation and Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 for training, support services, and employment in the transportation industry.
