Scope and Contents

The Long Beach Chapter of National Organization for Women (N.O.W.) Collection (1965-1994; undated) contains 1 box and .21 linear feet of material relating to the Long Beach Chapter of the National Organization for Women (N.O.W.), such as flyers for events and elections; meal tickets; a luncheon program; issues of "California NOW Activist" and "NOW in Long Beach" newsletter; and layouts for flyers and the "NOW in Long Beach" newsletter. Photographs in this collection were taken at rallies and marches regarding the Equal Rights Amendment, abortion rights, and others events. Also included in this collection are materials related to Carol McCafferty, a N.O.W. member. These materials include: a biography, resume, notes; and letters and teacher salary schedule for Paramount Unified School District, where McCafferty was a teacher and reading specialist. Finally, this collection includes material related to the "Safe Streets NOW" program in Long Beach including a community action guide, clippings, and brochures.

"The National Organization for Women is the largest organization of feminist grassroots activists in the United States. NOW has hundreds of chapters and hundreds of thousands of members and activists in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since our founding in 1966, NOW’s purpose is to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination, and achieve and protect the equal rights of all women and girls in all aspects of social, political, and economic life."
