Scope and Contents

The Leuzinger High School Collection (1906, 1929-2010; undated) consists of various school related materials beginning from its establishment in 1930 until 2010. This collection is arranged into five series. Series I: Photographs contains images of students, teachers, class pictures, administration, and sports teams; Series II: History, Scrapbooks, and Ephemera contains notes, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, sports programs and other material regarding the history of Leuzinger High School and the Leuzinger family as well as documents related to the fine arts and music departments, career center, reunions, commencement, and others; Series III: Pylon Yearbooks contains Leuzinger high school yearbooks; Series IV: "The Olympian" and other publications contains issues of "The Olympian" newpaper, "Leuzinger Hi-Lights", and "The Alumnus"; and Series V: Centinela Valley Union High School District and other education material contains an Inglewood high school yearbook from 1930, images of candy stripers and student teen volunteers for Hawthorne Community Hospital, Centinela Valley Union High School District publications and directory, and a California Teachers Association bulletin.

Leuzinger High School History

Leuzinger High School (LHS) is one of three comprehensive high schools in the Centinela Valley Union High School District (CVUHSD) located in the city of Lawndale, approximately 20 miles southwest of the city of Los Angeles. Leuzinger High School opened on January 27th, 1930 in Lawndale, with 275 students and 13 faculty members. The school was named after Adolph Leuzinger (1859-1931) in recognition of his 25 years of service on the Board of Trustees of the Inglewood Union High School District. The first LHS senior class graduated during the time of the 1932 Summer Olympics that were currently being held in Los Angeles, in recognition of this the LHS mascot was named the “Olympians” and the symbol stands as the same Olympic rings.

Abstract

The Leuzinger High School Collection consists of various school related materials beginning from its establishment in 1930 until 2010. Contents include: class photographs and images taken of team sports, teachers, and students; sports programs; issues of "The Olympian" newspaper; yearbooks; musical and theater programs, and audio recordings; The Alumnus newspaper, commencement programs, aerial views and layouts of the LHS campus and facilities; scrapbooks; documents related to the history of the high school and Leuzinger family; and material related to Centinela Valley Union High School District.
