Mike Hiranuma Family Photographs (1942-1945) contains 4.66 mb of digitized photographs donated at a Scanning Day event in 2018. The photographs belonged to John and Edna Hiranuma and are related to the Hiranuma family during their incarceration at the Heart Mountain incarceration camp. Images include camp barracks and incarcerees.

Hiranuma Family

John K. Hiranuma, Michael Hiranuma's father, was born in the late 1800s and moved from Hokkaido or Yezu, Japan to the United States before World War II. Edna Ouchi, Michael's mother, was born in Hawaii around 1916 and moved to California in the 1940s. During World War II, John Hiranuma and Edna Ouchi both moved to the Santa Anita racetrack and then to the Heart Mountain incarceration camp. They arrived at the camp in September 1942. In October 1943, John and Edna got married and had their son, Michael Shigeo Hiranuma, a year later. After leaving the camp on June 15, 1945, the family moved to Buffalo, New York. After leaving New York, the family moved to Los Angeles, California.

This collection contains photographs of the Hiranuma family and others at the Heart Mountain incarceration camp. Images in the collection include barracks, incarcerees, and life at the camp. All of the items in this collection have been digitized and are available online.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Mike Hiranuma donated the digitized photographs during a Scanning Day event in 2018. The original material was returned to the donor.
