Scope and Contents

The Sumi Family Manzanar Photographs (circa 1944, 2018) includes 5.07 mb of digitized photographs of the Sumi family at and on their way to the Manzanar incarceration camp. The first picture is of the family at the rock garden at Block 34. The second photo is printed from a newspaper and depicts Yoichi and Senichi waiting for the train to Manzanar.

Biographical / Historical

The Manzanar incarceration camp was established on June 2, 1942, in Manzanar, California. Shortly after it was established, the Sumi family moved from West Los Angeles to the camp. They later transferred to the Tule Lake incarceration center in 1944 and lived there until 1946. After Tule Lake, the family settled in Sawtelle, California.

Abstract

The Sumi Family Manzanar Photographs includes two digitized photographs from the Sumi family, who were forceably removed to the Manzanar incarceration camp during World War II. Some of the material in this collection is digitized and available online.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

The digitalized photographs are JPG files stored on the Public Use Drive. Access to the files is available on-site in the Gerth Archives and Special Collections reading room. Please request copies at the reference desk.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Yoichi Sumi donated the digitized photographs during a Scanning Day event in 2018. The original material was returned to the donor.
