Scope and Contents

This collection contains one photograph album of 108 black-and-white photographs taken at two Civilian Conservation Corps Camps. 64 of the photographs are of Camp 271 by Company 1653 at Camp Heywood (Jaype-Pierce, Idaho); and 44 photographs are of Project P-230 with Company 3330 at Santa Susanna (Simi, California).

Photographs taken in Idaho include images of the forest, local church, mess hall, officer quarters, supply tents, and other pictures taken during the construction of camp areas and forestry projects. Photographs taken in California feature camp facilities, cargo trucks, dynamite storage, train tracks, and road construction for the Black Canyon Road (currently Sage Ranch Park) with bulldozers.

Also included in this album are images of Pasadena, California including photographs of the 1935 Rose Parade, the 1935 Rose Bowl game between Stanford and Alabama, and one photograph of Devil's Gate Dam.

Biographical / Historical

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public work relief program that ran from 1933-1942 in the United States. Created as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, the CCC provided manual labor jobs for unemployed and unmarried men ages 18-28. Jobs in the CCC related to conservation and the development of rural lands owned by local, state, and federal governments and included projects such as planting trees; constructing trails, lodges, and other buildings in parks nationwide; as well as public roadways, Camps, such as the two featured in this collection, were temporary built around any areas where work was to be performed.
