Scope and Contents

The General Donald F. Stace Collection (1939-1971; undated) contains one box and .21 ft of material belonging to Brigadier General Donald F. Stace. The majority of the collection contains official photos of the United States Air Force, including photos of the 173rd anniversary of the Chaplain Corps; the Air Force Association banquet at Penn Harris Hotel; photos of a Consolidated B-24 Liberator with a note from Hill and Knowlton, the public relations firm in New York to the Consolidated Vultee San Diego plant; a photo of the Brazilian political Party arriving at Mine's Field, now known as the Los Angeles International Airport; and a photo of General Donald F. Stace visiting the North American Aviation company. The box also contains a note to Dr. Greiner, receiving the collection belonging to General Donald F. Stace for use in the History Department, several newsletter clippings of the North American Aviation Skywriter featuring General Stace, a biography of Brigadier General Donald F. Stace written by a student of Dr. Grenier, Congressional Record regarding "post-war Housing" printed on March 30, 1944; a brochure of the Guam Air Depot featuring photos of the Air Base'; a letter from Major General Charles E. Bradshaw announcing his retirement; a notice of the first purchase of the Eisenhower War Bond; and a memorandum that includes financial market updates from November 12, 1943 and the nomination of General Donald F. Stace to be Brigadier General. Lastly, it contains several speeches made by Brigadier General Donald F. Stace regarding Victory in Europe Day and messages encouraging workers to continue building more airplanes despite the fall of Germany.

Biographical / Historical

Brigadier General Donald F. Stace was born on July 4, 1900, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Arthur and Lillian Stace. Brigadier General Stace attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree on June 15, 1920. Soon after graduating, on July 2, 1920, Brigadier General Stace was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Coast Artillery. He graduated from the Coast Artillery Corps in June of 1921 and moved to Carlstrom Field, Florida where he completed training at the Air Service Pilots school in December 1921. Brigadier General Stace attended Air Service Engineering School at McCook Field in Ohio from October 1922 to April 1923. He met his wife, Kathleen Larue in Hawaii and married on July 11, 1927. From 1931 to 1932 he attended the Air Corps Engineering school and graduated in 1932. In 1939 he graduated from the Army Air Corps Tactical School in Maxwell Field, Alabama and the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1940. During the Second World War, Brigadier General Stace served as a Factory Representative at North American Aviation. He was promoted as a Major in July 1940, Lieutenant Colonel in July 1941, and Colonel in 1942. From June to August 1945, he served as Director of Air Supply in Hawaii. At the end of the war, Brigadier General Stace served as Commanding General of the Guam Air Depot until June 1947. He was then assigned to the Chief Industrial and Plans Division at Headquarters Air Force until December of 1947. In December of 1947 he served as Commanding General of the Middleton Air Material Area in Middleton, Pennsylvania. In October of 1950 he served as Commanding General of the Western Procurement District in Los Angeles. In August of 1951, he retired due to a physical disability.
