Los Angeles Gang Resource Collection
Scope and Contents
The Los Angeles Gang Resources Collection (1975-2001; undated) contains five boxes and 2.1ft. of material belonging to Ernie Paculba. The majority of the collection contains reports, videos, books, and other material regarding gangs in Los Angeles, California. Box one contains several program planning guides regarding Project Heavy, including Program design issues, Diversion Evaluation Specification, Operations Plan: Project Heavy; A Curriculum for Teaching Self Esteem in the Classroom by Jo Ellen Hartline. Box two contains resources for parents and teachers, including a booklet regarding the Los Angeles Sheriff’s S.A.N.E program, an information packet on the Gang Violence Reduction Project, several government reports regarding gangs in Los Angeles, CDs and CD-ROMs including The Crystal Method CD; MTV Fight for your Rights: Take a Stand Against Violence CD; J.U.M.P City CD-ROM; Safer Interactive Pedestrian Safety Awareness Journey, and Ernie Paculba’s Resumé. Box three contains videotapes including Life Behind Bars-Letters from Within; Post Street Gangs Telecourse “(Part 1: Hispanic Gangs)”; ”LA Riots”- PBS; ABC Afterschool Special "Learning Not to Hurt"; Fox Smart Kids; Paul Moyers-PBS "What We Can Do About Violence"; Out of Order: Rock The Vote Targets Health; a spreadsheet that came from the Hip Hop Subculture videotape with a list of subjects regarding videotapes related to youth, violence, and gangs; A letter regarding Rock the Vote with a list of segments and duration of each segment; Solutions to Violence PBS; a videotape named “Solutions”; Teen Files “Truth About Violence"; Hip Hop Subculture; Getting Up! Tagging in Southern California; “P.O.S.T-Hispanic Street Gangs”; The Cost of Denial: What--we're doing now is not working! Increased spending on our Criminal Justice System has not stemmed the tide of increasing youth violence and crime. It's time for a new approach. Biographical / Historical
Ernie Paculba was born on October 13, 1939. Paculba graduated in 1956 from Banning High School in Wilmington, CA. Paculba worked as a youth worker at the Wilmington Teen Center in California between 1957 and 1961. He attended Harbor College from 1961 to 1963 without receiving a degree. Paculba dedicated the remainder of his career to public service in relation to youth services and gang prevention services in the Los Angeles County of California, working as an Area Director (1975-1981) and Youth Services Coordinator(1981-1987) for “Project HEAVY,” an Executive Director (1987-1996) for the Harbor Area Gang Alternative Program (GAP), and as a Youth Services Consultant beginning in 1996 for the city of Carson Public Safety Department. Paculba had served as a member of the California Attorney General’s Gang Prevention Committee, the Multi-Agency Graffiti Intervention Committee (MAGIC), the Los Angeles County Interagency Gang Task Force, and the National Graffiti Information Network.
