Scope and Contents
Negatives and prints. Includes images taken during the progress of extinguishing a fire. Prior to July 1, 1960, pictures taken during inspection of a property after a fire will be listed under "Fire Prevention". After July 1, 1960, all fires will be listed under "Fire" regardless of whether the photographs were taken during the fire or after. Includes images of residential and commercial fires. This series includes images of fires caused by activities of the oil industry in Long Beach, including some early oil field fires such as the Fisher Oil fire in 1924, the Alamitos fire in 1927, the Richfield Oil Refinery fire in 1933, and the Hancock Oil Refinery fire in 1958. Also includes images of the fire at Pier 1, which was the most disastrous fire in the history of the city of Long Beach.
