Scope and Contents
Grantee Files consist mainly of correspondence, forms, transcripts, memoranda, and photographs of Foundation fellows. Also, a fellowship index is located separately in oversize box 106. Theses and Reports folders contain theses and reports by Foundation fellows, including class papers, reprints of journal articles, and published books. Originally grouped into two separate in 1987, they have been combined into one series, with any existing Theses and Reports folder located after the Grantee File. Not all grantees have Theses and Reports folders; some Grantee Giles include papers and journal articles, which were not separated into a Theses and Reports folder. The subject the grantee studied while using Del Amo Foundation funds is noted by folder. Of note are grantee Dr. Manuel Hidalgo Huerta (box 46, folder 3), Franco’s chief surgeon at the time of his death; the photographs of the orange industry in Los Angeles, found in the folder of grantee Ricardo Perez Calvet (box 62, folder 4); correspondence to and from Salvador de Madariaga, Spanish ambassador to the United States and France, and delegate to the League of Nations (box 52, folder 7); and California Poet Laureate John Stevens McGroarty (box 58, folder 1).
