Scope and Contents
Sub-Series A: Johnson Forest Tendency Papers (1933-1964) contains material related to the Johnson-Forest Tendency (JFT) during Art Kunkin's involvement with the group. The Johnson-Forest Tendency was a Troskyite tendency lead by CLR James and Raya Dunayevskaya. This sub-series also contains Workers' Party and Socialist Workers Party from JFT's membership in both parties. Material in this sub-series highlights the work of Art Kunkin and his first wife, Abby Rubenstein (Addis), within the JFT including Kunkin's editorial work for Correspondence and News and Letters from the 1940s to 1958 and later subsequent work. Material in this sub-series contains minutes, memos, and circulars disseminated amongst JFT membership, manuscripts, flyers, testimonies, and other material representing socialist organizing in Los Angeles and the broader country. Material in this sub-series dates back to the 1930s with material, including circulars, related to Leon Trotsky, AJ Muste, James P. Cannon, and other Socialist leadership of the earl 20th century.
