Series III: Los Angeles County, 1979, 1990, 1994, 1995, 2003, 2011-2024; undated

This series contains material related to Torrance Refining Company, City of Torrance, County of Los Angeles, and other Southern California area refineries. A majority of the material in this series relates to the Torrance Refinery ExxonMobil explosion in 2015 and aftermath and includes the City of Torrance and County of Los Angeles’ involvement regarding efforts made to support a ban of modified hydrofluoric acid (MHF). This series is divided into two sub-series. Sub-Series A: Torrance Refining Company contains reports, memorandums, articles, meeting agendas and minutes, emails, and other documents regarding the Torrance Refining Company, the Torrance Refinery ExxonMobil Explosion in 2015 and aftermath including the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board report, Torrance Refinery Safety Plan, inspection reports, documents regarding safety enhancements, and other related materials. This sub-series also contains material regarding PBF Energy, Torrance Refinery’s parent company; and material regarding ExxonMobil including court case documents, articles, clippings, and brochures. Sub-Series B: City of Torrance and Los Angeles County contains Torrance City Council Torrance Refinery workshop material, emails sent to Torrance City Council to support the ban of MHF, material related to the Safe and Secure Community program, and County of Los Angeles initiatives for safer practices regarding MHF. Also included in this sub-series are documents regarding the Valero Wilmington Refinery, and articles and clippings related to other Southern California area oil refineries, chemical sites, and the Port of Los Angeles.
