Biographical / Historical

La Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy) is an Italian narrative poem by Dante Alighieri (c. 1265-1321) which he began writing in 1308 and completed in 1320. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. It helped to establish the Tuscan language as the standardized Italian language and is widely considered one of the greatest works of Italian and world literature.

Gustave Dore (1832-1883) was a French artist specializing as a printmaker, illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor. He is best known for his work involving wood-engravings, especially those illustrating classic books, including 241 illustrating the Bible (La Grande Bible de Tours).
