Civil Liberties Public Education Fund (CLPEF), 1981-2016

 Series

Scope and Contents

The Civil Liberties Public Education Fund (CLPEF) was established in 1996 in response to the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. Its purpose was to educate the public on lessons learned from the World War II Japanese American incarceration and the issues surrounding it. The CLPEF funded 135 projects and fellowships related to the Japanese American experience through a $3.3 million grant program. It also hired Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga to edit over 4,500 pages of CWRIC hearing transcripts. This series includes drafts, progress reports, computer files, news releases, transcription edits, correspondence, and other documents and material related to the Civil Liberties Public Education Fund.

This series contains two subseries, Civil Liberties Public Education Fund and Speaking Out for Personal Justice: Site Summaries of Testimonies and Witnesses Registry of CWRIC Hearings, 1981. The CLPEF contains information related to Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga's transcription of the Commission on Wartime of the CWRIC hearings. The second subseries, Speaking Out for Personal Justice: Site Summaries of Testimonies and Witnesses Registry of CWRIC Hearings, 1981 is a book edited by Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga and the University of California, Los Angeles, Marjorie Lee. In 1998, the CLPEF provided UCLA with grant funds to facilitate the publication of Aiko Herzig Yoshinaga's transcription work, resulting in this book. It contains abstracts and other information related to the CWRIC hearings.
