Scope and Content

The California State Employees Association (CSEA) Collection consists of newsletters published by CSEA and branches of CSEA, administrative materials, and newsletters and administrative materials related to other related labor organizations.

The bulk of the CSEA newsletters are "The California State Employee Newsletter" and newsletters from the San Jose State College/University branch of CSEA. CSEA administrative materials include correspondence, ephemera, collective bargaining agreements, meeting materials, and reports.

Other labor organization newsletters and administrative materials include materials from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), California Association of State Teachers College Instructors, California Teachers Association, United Professors of California (UPC), and others. The materials from other labor unions includes newsletters, correspondence, and ephemera.

All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the Director of Archives and Special Collections. Permission for publication is given on behalf of Special Collections as the owner of the physical materials and not intended to include or imply permission of the copyright holder, which must also be obtained.

History

The California State Employees Association (CSEA) was founded in 1931 and provides membership, accounting, payroll, IT and human resources services to affiliated organizations: the Association of California State Supervisors, California State Retirees, SEIU Local 1000, and the California State University Employees Union (CSUEU). CSEA no longer provides lobbying, legislative or political action services.

Abstract

California State Employees Association Collection consists of the newsletter/newspaper "The California State Employee." 1970-1975.The California State Employees Association (CSEA) Collection consists of newsletters published by CSEA and branches of CSEA, administrative materials, and newsletters and administrative materials related to other related labor organizations.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into four distinct series.

  1. CSEA Newsletters (1964-1996)
  2. Other Labor Organization Newsletters (1931-1989)
  3. CSEA Administrative Materials (1929-1996; undated)
  4. Other Labor Organization Administrative Materials (1928-1982; 2010)

Acquisition Information

Materials in this collection were transferred by the Chancellor’s Office, California State University and collected by archives staff. Materials were also donated by Fresno State University. It is a growing collection.

Processing Information

The bulk of the newsletters were processed during 2004-2006 CSU System-wide Archives Processing Project, comprising the California State Employees Association Newsletter Collection (CSU-038). Further processing of materials donated by Fresno State was completed by Erica Watson in 2011 and turned into the California State Employees Association Collection (formerly CSU-058). These two collections were merged by Shawne West in 2024 to reduce redundancies.
