Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series contains biographical material on Louis Heilbron including a written account of his experiences as a trustee from an oral history project (1987). A large number of files are dedicated to drafts of his manuscripts The College and University Trustee: A View from the Board Room (1972) and From the Beginning: Commencement Addresses and Selected Papers (1983). Trustee identifies and suggests answers to some troublesome issues concerning trustee roles, education goals, admission standards, tenure, student participation, academic freedom, collective bargaining and the relationships with faculty, students and government. From the Beginning is a collection of commencement addresses and other papers on the pressing educational issues of the 1960’s and 1970’s including education reform, faculty rights, student unrest and institutional integrity. The remainder of the series contains commencement addresses, panel presentations, association speeches, publications, position papers, correspondence and notes covering the salient academic issues of the time. Manuscript drafts are arranged by chapter, while other materials are arranged in chronological order.
